A deeper music library + Smart Import
BSB's music library looks up the details for you (composer, arranger, grade, duration) and Smart Import reads CSV/XLSX/PDF/DOCX and even photos of paper catalogs. Band Pencil lists a music library on its site; from their public marketing it looks lighter than this.
A weekly email to the band, approved before it sends
Each week, leadership gets a short request for news. Their replies go in word for word, next to the rehearsal and concert details, and someone in your band approves the email before it goes out — on the day your band picks. It replaces the BCC ritual, and the rhythm doesn't depend on one person remembering. Band Pencil lists messaging; we didn't find a weekly-email routine like this on their site.
16 distinct permission roles
Community-band governance is rich: president, music director, treasurer, librarian, section leader, membership coordinator, equipment manager, marketing director, secretary, fundraising coordinator. BSB ships 16 distinct roles — each person sees exactly what their job needs — and every role can be renamed to match your band's titles. From its public site, Band Pencil's permissions look simpler.
Grant reporting
BSB ships a tap-once-per-person audience counter and a grant report that lists every concert in the period with its venue and county, the audience split adult and youth and by county, and performer counts. Built around what local arts councils, community foundations and state arts agencies ask for. Band Pencil's reporting is more general-purpose.
A mobile app with no app store
BSB installs to iPhone and Android home screens straight from the browser (on iPhone: Share, then Add to Home Screen) — nothing to download from an app store. Members live on their phones; the day-of rehearsal card, day-of RSVP, swipe-to-contact, and calendar feed all work natively. Band Pencil is responsive web.
Welcome emails for new members
Every new BSB member gets a welcome, an introduction to their section leader a couple of hours later, what to expect on day 2, and on day 3 how to put the concert calendar and the app on their phone. The seam between joining and belonging gets handled automatically.

We're not trying to win every comparison. Band Pencil is a real product and a better choice in specific cases:
